“I am not a teacher, but an awakener.”

-Robert Frost

All students deserve access to quality education regardless of race, ethnicity, native language, learning ability or status. An educator’s role is to develop a culturally responsive classroom where all students feel safe and are encouraged to learn. It is important to create an environment where students can relate to the content by creating experiences they can build upon (Dewey, 1859-1952). This will support students through their entire lives as they will learn how to think in order to solve problems. By developing a classroom where students are free to explore their ideas and opinions, students’ affective filter will be lowered allowing them to be open to learning (Krashen, 1982). Teacher and students will learn how to be reflective and collaborative throughout their education.
